New Recess Initiative

You may have heard that FSMA has a new initiative for increasing the amount of physical activity children participate in each day.  At the younger grades (K – 3rd), students will go to the playground or gym twice each day.  At the upper grades, our PE teacher, Kerry, will be working with classroom teachers to offer a combination of structured and unstructured activities in the gym and outside.

Not only does this match with our personal beliefs about children, but there is also a good amount of research that supports the idea that increasing recess can increase many things such as engagement, concentration and learning.  We are looking forward to seeing how this impacts children and our school community.
