It’s A Girl!
Room 10 students have had some exciting metamorphoses in their classroom. First, they saw some very hungry Monarch caterpillars munching on milkweed. Once they have eaten their fill and grown tremendously, the children saw the caterpillars make a silk button to attach upside down to the top of their enclosure and get into a J position. It was a rare sight to be able to observe many of them turn into emerald green chrysalises bedazzled with gold dots before their very eyes in just minutes. After about a week, the chrysalis turned translucent and out came the crinkly butterfly with a swollen abdomen. Several hours later, the wings straightened out and we were able to identify the butterfly as a female. We will set her free soon so she can start her long journey to Mexico. The miracle of nature is happening in room 10!
