Summer Learning

Did you know? On average, Students lose up to 2 ½ months of math skills over the summer and reading skills decline by about the equivalent of 2 months.
The good news is that the summer learning loss is completely preventable! This doesn’t mean that students need to “do school” over the summer. While we provide some guidance on things to complete to maintain skills, we also see value in so many other learning opportunities.
In general, we recommend creating learning opportunities that focus on each child’s passions and strengths and in the way that is most effective for them… choosing content they love and providing learning opportunities to build knowledge, and skills in an individualized way (just like we do in school). For example, if a child is struggling with fractions but loves to cook, allow them to practice their math skills while doing something that they love. If they need to practice their reading fluency, allow them to choose books of personal interest.
And don’t forget the importance of exploring the beautiful world around us – interacting with their friends and family, growing children’s inquisitive minds, fostering their creativity, and limiting the use of technology.
At a minimum… everyday should include – outside time, reading time, time with a writing utensil in your hand, and mathematical thinking. It can be that simple, and we look forward to hearing all about it!
