Involve your Children in Back to School Shopping

As you are planning to shop for school supplies, we strongly encourage you to involve your child in the process.  As a Montessori community, we are always looking for practical life opportunities to grow our children’s skills and this is a perfect opportunity!  By letting them pick out their own items—within set guidelines—they gain a sense of ownership and learn practical, hands-on responsibility.

What do children get out of shopping for school supplies?  A ton! Here are some of the possible benefits:

• Building Confidence and Excitement: Allowing children to choose their favorite backpack, notebooks, or pencil case makes them feel prepared and excited to engage in class.
• Fostering Independence: Letting your child cross items off their official list and manage their selections teaches organization and self-reliance.
• Teaching Financial Literacy: You can use this trip to teach the value of a dollar. By giving them a set budget or showing them how to compare name-brand items with store-brand alternatives, they learn basic money management.
